Art is a Journey: Useful insight on how to master being an artist

The journey to becoming an artist is anything but a straight line. Not realizing this, was holding me back. Every artist is at a different spot in their own art journey. You do not have to be at the same spot as your favorite artists. Strive to fall in love with your own art journey. Many artists struggle with perfectionism, myself included. I have countless unfinished pieces, too scared to find out what the finished product would be. But that is just it. I was too focused on what the finished product would be. And it could be something magical.

Your art could be something magical, don't get in the way of that.

I then realized that I needed to get proactive about my goals. Starting with telling myself & others that I wanted to be, even was, an artist. That sounded weird coming out of my mouth but it was my step down the right path.

Sometimes you need a push down the art path.

My first step was to actually make art. A lot of it. All the time. Do a lot of research on what you like and what your target audience would like. I am aiming for teens through late thirty year olds, who appreciate art, and have a lot of important people or pets in their lives that would push them towards customized digital art from a free lance artist. There are many ways to define your target audience, but that's another blog post.

Developing your skills & artistic style is something that takes time. You can make progress quickly, but you should never have an end goal. Instead, enjoy practicing & learning from mistakes. Don't get hung up in the details. It's just art.

Making art and sharing art.

Slowly, I started posting on Instagram. Even if I didn't like what I was posting. Eventually, I developed a process and style that helped me stand out as an artist. I started thinking of Instagram as a game. By playing this game, I was engaging and putting my art out there, every day. I was learning art, communicating with artists from all over the world; my first commission client even found me through Instagram! You may think you're a real artist , but it is not until you learn from experience that you start to actually feel like a real artist.

And that, my friends, is a good feeling.
