Interesting Books for Artists: 2 Books to Inspire your Creativity

If you're anything like me, the path to becoming an artist hasn't always been straight. We all know practice makes perfect, but it was hard for me to even do that. I kept wanting to be an artist, but nothing gave me the push to get there. Until I read these lovely books.

This has been my favorite book for quite some time now. I've read it twice & listened to it on audiobook once. It has inspired me in more ways than just creatively. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a little magic in their life. The book focuses one pushing through the fear you have to start living a more creative life.

What fear do I have, you ask? Here's a quick excerpt from the book I enjoyed reading,
"You're afraid you have no talent. You’re afraid you’ll be rejected or criticized or ridiculed or misunderstood or—worst of all—ignored. You’re afraid somebody else already did it better. You’re afraid somebody will steal your ideas, so it’s safer to keep them hidden forever in the dark. You’re afraid you won’t be taken seriously. You’re afraid that someday you’ll look back on your creative endeavors as having been a giant waste of time, effort, and money.
This book gives you permission, gives you stories & ideas that really will change your perspective on whatever creative endeavors you are striving for.

This book is separated in six parts:
  • Courage: Stop defending your weakness, overcome your fear & get your work out there!

  • Enchantment: Eye-opening stories about what Big Magic is & letting inspiration come & go

  • Permission: You are allowed to take up space, to make mistakes, to keep doing your thing

  • Persistence: Don't strive for perfection or it'll never get finished. "Done is better than good"

  • Trust: Trust inspiration & yourself. Some really fun ideas in this part.

  • Divinity: "Creativity is sacred, and it is not sacred"

Overall, this Big Magic pushed me out of fear and helped me to actually create, or to make something everyday. Whether that something is a masterpiece or just eh. If you are feeling in a creative rut or just looking for some inspiration, this is a must-read.

This was one of the first audiobooks I listened to, and it really opened my eyes to the journey of becoming an artist. This book focuses on developing your own artistic voice. Which is important for an artist, but it takes time & patience getting there. Two things I wasn't so good at before reading.

This book is separated into seven chapters:
  • What is an Artistic Voice? (Something I didn't know how to develop for myself)

  • Why Does Having a Voice Matter?

  • The Path

  • Navigating Influence

  • The Importance of Showing Up, Practicing & Setting Routines

  • Begin Anyhow: Moving Through Fear (common theme we have going huh)

  • Strategies for Developing Your Own Voice

This book gives you a good, realistic timeline & guide for finding your voice as an artist. Your voice is what sets you apart from others. You must always be practicing, trusting the process, & experimenting.

Influence is also important topic mentioned in the book. Bottom line is, nothing is original. Everyone is just looking for inspiration from others, & making it your own. This is what takes practice. Having an eye for ideas & making it into something brand new. Routines also play a role in finding your voice. This book helps you find one that works for you.

Find Your Artistic Voice also talks about pushing though fear. Gives a different perspective on the same subject, but it is oh so important to instill in your brain. The last part of the book really gives you tools & strategies to create your own unique, artist voice & to put it in action.
"Your voice is really your superpower"
