Are your digital images pixelated when you post to Instagram? Are you unsure what the different size canvases all mean? Want to take your art to the next level with crisper images? Heres a quick guide on the dimensions that matter.
Lets start with some basic terms
Pixel: Combined to form a complete image
DPI: Dots per inch, want to stay around 300
Inch x DPI = pixel
Instead of using the canvases that are already in Procreate, create your own. You can use the formula above with this if you have an idea of what it is you are trying to create. If you have a size in inches you want to print in mind, multiply that by 300 dpi to get the pixel dimensions of your canvas. You can input this with the little plus sign in the upper right corner in Procreate.
If doing any sort of math is too much, here are some recommended sizes for print and digital
Digital
Pinterest Pin: 1000 x 1500px
Instagram Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels
Instagram Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
Youtube Video: 1280 x 720 pixels
Facebook Stories: 1080 x 1920 pixels
Facebook Timeline Photos: 1200 x 630 pixels
Deviant Art: 1920 x 1080 pixels
In general, 3300 x 2550 pixels
8.5'' x 11'' paper: 2550 x 3300 pixels
11'' x 14'' paper: 3300x4200 pixels
12'' x 18'' paper: 3600x5400 pixels
18'' x 24'' paper: 5400x7200 pixels
5'' x 7'' postcard: 1500x2100 pixels
24" x 36" poster: 7200x10800 pixels
These are general size guidelines, I always recommend going bigger, especially digitally. With that, you do lose layers the larger the canvas size, so keep that in mind. For big projects, you might want to consider vector based software such as Adobe Illustrator. But that is another blog post.
